Below are some examples of how taking a preventative approach with health planning has improved performance and animal health.

Attention to detail keeps herd on track
The key to success for Andrew Rees, the 2010 Farmers Weekly Young Farmer of the Year, is his attention to detail, believes his vet Mike Thorne. Andrew utilises the services of Mike Thorne and his fellow vets at Farm Vet Solutions to help monitor the overall health and production of his herd. An annual cost review is also carried out by Mike in which the cost of medicines through the year is analysed, to ensure that the focus is on preventative and not fire-fighting treatment of disease.

Flock health planning reduces lameness cases
Flock health planning has helped reduce lameness and prevent arthritis on a Northamptonshire farm. Eysipelas infection was damaging joints and leading to lameness and production losses. A vaccination programme now has it all under control. In another flock, Contagious Ovine Digital Dermatitis (CODD) was diagnosed. This is now controlled by inspecting all bought-in stock and routine footbathing for the whole flock. Read more about the case and how health planning can benefit the long term health and welfare of a flock.

Strategic drenching resolves liver fluke infection
An investigation into a growing number of sudden ewe deaths on one Leicestershire farm revealed liver fluke to be the culprit. Infestations are now controlled by strategic drenching – all part of a sheep flock health plan put together by FVS. Read more about the case and how to identify whether liver fluke is a problem on your farm.
